The Different Types of Pallets
Pallets can be purchased in a variety of shapes and sizes. However, all of these
pallets can be categorized as either "block pallets" or "stringer pallets". Now
pallets can be generated to custom strength and size specifications to keep
costs and space under control. A software program developed for the National
Wooden Pallet & Container Association helps to generate these pallets designs on
command. Their program is known as Pallet Design System (PDS©). A competing
program that performs similar designs tasks is Cap3d.
Description of Stringer Pallets
Three parallel boards, or stingers, are placed together to form the frame of a
stringer pallet. Deckboards are put on top of this to form the rest of the
structure of each pallet. The shape of the stringer pallets only allows
forklifts access from two sides.
Description of Block Pallets
In contrast to the standard stringer pallets, block pallets allow forklifts
access to all four sides. This is because the block pallets make use of
perpendicular and parallel boards. This also makes block pallets sturdier than
stringer pallets. You may occasionally see block pallets referred to as GKN
pallets.
